Kelliher Statement on Tom Emmer's Proposed Tip Penalty

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Tom Emmer disclosed today that he would enact a tip penalty for restaurant workers. DFL-endorsed candidate for Governor Margaret Anderson Kelliher worked with Archbishop Harry Flynn and others to pass legislation in 2008 to increase the minimum wage by $1.50. Tim Pawlenty vetoed the bill. Kelliher had this to say about Emmer’s statements today.

“More than 208,000 Minnesotans are out of work. Thousands more are working harder and earning less.

“My opponent Tom Emmer announced today that if elected Governor he would enact a tip penalty for restaurant workers – allowing employers to cut wages even deeper for hard-working Minnesotans.

“That’s wrong.

“As a working mom, I know how hard it is to balance the checkbook at the end of the month. And in this economy, every dollar matters.

“I know where I come from, and I will never forget who I am fighting for. As Governor I will stand up for hard-working families. I will lead the charge to increase the minimum wage. Because making ends meet isn’t getting any easier.”
